Kiefer Sutherland has been swamped with "a ton of fan mail" since beginning his 48-day jail sentence.

The actor has received more than 100 letters a day since starting his sentence Dec. 5 in California's Glendale City Jail. Sutherland is serving time for driving under the influence and violating his probation for another offense.

Spokesman for the Glendale City Jail John Balian said, "The guy has been getting a ton of fan mail. Easily more than 100 letters a day.

"He certainly seems to have a lot of support out there."

Sutherland will be behind bars for Christmas and New Year, as well as his birthday on December 21.

The 40-year-old star - who plays counter terrorist agent Jack Bauer in hit US TV show '24' - has reportedly been a "model prisoner".

Balian said, "He's not happy to be here, but you can tell from his demeanor that he's sorry and takes responsibility for what he's done. He's a model prisoner."

Sutherland has three stepchildren and one biological daughter from his two failed marriages. As a 'worker inmate' Sutherland's duties include folding laundry and serving meals to fellow inmates.
