Transformers 2 director Michael Bay says Shia LaBeouf's injury from his weekend car crash may be tied into the upcoming blockbuster sequel.

“His two fingers are pretty mashed, but we’re figuring out a way to shoot around it, kind of write it in the story,” Bay told
Access Hollywood of the actor, 22, who has undergone extensive hand surgery.

Although LaBeouf was charged with a misdemeanor DUI on July 27, Bay insisted the actor wasn't drunk when his green Ford F-150 truck collided with another car. (On Tuesday, police said LaBeouf was not at fault; the other driver apparently ran a red light.)

Witnesses tell Usmagazine.com that LaBeouf was doing shots of whiskey at L.A.'s Troubadour club before he and co-star Isabel Lucas were involved in the crash. Police later said that LaBeouf showed "outward signs of intoxication."

“You’re gonna see — that’s gonna go away,” Bay said of the DUI charge. "He was not drunk. He was drinking hours and hours before.”

Ironically, Bay said he warned LaBeouf about driving safely days before the collision.

“We had a little heart to heart the week before when he bought a brand new motorcycle," he recalled. "[I said], ‘Dude, you cannot ride that motorcycle! If you crash, you put 1,500 people out of work!'

“He said, ‘Ok, I won’t ride it,'" Bay added. "'I’ll just drive my truck.’”

Despite the setback, Bay insisted LaBeouf "really has his head together.

"He’s only 22,” Bay added. “He’s doing a great job on this movie. He’s really matured since the last one, and I love working with him.”
